Višegrad And Its Bridge Over The Drina

"The Bridge On The Drina" is a masterpiece of literature. Bosnian Ivo Andrić received the Nobel Prize for Literature for this "novel" in 1961. He leads you through the thunderstorms that have been circling over the Balkans for centuries. [If you are interested in reviews and content please check your local Amazon-dealer]
"The Drina is the river which symbolically represents the border between Bosnia on one side, and Serbia on the other", Aleksandra wrote on "Living in Europe" (before the content was deleted) how history took further toll.
I didn't know anything about Andrić, the Drina or the bridge. (Update: Been there, seen it in July 06.) But when I found the following pictures the bridge looked exactly as Andrić described it.

Višegrad, The bridge, Andrić
I do not know where to start. Yes, the bridge is beautiful, and the novel Andrić wrote - The bridge on the Drina - is the must to understand a little bit of Bosnia. (Allow me to draw your attention to Ivo Andić site: http://www.ivoandric.org.yu/)
But Višegrad suffered a lot. In this war, in II World War... It is really sad. (Spent some summers as the child there, therefore I know!)

Death and the Dervish
Beside Andrić' s novels, there is Death and the Dervish by Mesa Selimovic, I highly recomend it!

Hvala! Sounds good.
I am currently reading Rebecca West's "Black Lamb and Grey Falcon". That will keep me busy for a while.
Then there still is Jovan Ducic's "King Radovan's Treasure". I started reading it, but I think I need some background information on that one first.

novala, please let me know what you think of West's book. I almost bought it, but got cold feet in the last seconds because of some nasty reviews I read. (Although it's hard to find any book on the Balkans that people don't claim is terribly biased and/or awful.)
That said, "The Bridge On The Drina" is one of the greatest things to ever happen to paper. I would love to have my memory wiped clean and read it again for the first time.
I will definitely check Selimovic's novel, based on quod's suggestion.

Interesting
Up to now I have only read good comments on West's book in various pieces of literature dealing with the Balkans. But no author actually was from the Balkans. That probably makes a big difference.
Who wrote nasty comments?
