Halovo, Serbia: 538 meters above sea level, 500 meters away from the Bulgarian border. Number of houses: Depends on whom you talk to. Between 230 and 300. Halovo is about 15 to 20 km away from Zaječar.
Parts of the village
It sometimes seems to be life in a museum village. These wells are in daily use although houses do have taps.
What some houses don't have are toilets.
"P. finally has to built a toilet inside the house", Jovanka frowns, "the outside toilet is too far away."

No, this is not a museum village. This is a place which desperate people would like to leave - if they got a working-visa in Austria. "Look at Aleksandar", P. says, "he is twelve years old - twelve years of war, communism and unemployment. What motivation do we have to stay here?"

Das ist eine lange Geschichte
Ich habe im Frühjahr in der EU-Erweiterungsnacht eine Serbin an der österreichisch-ungarischen Grenzen aufgesammelt. Sie war auf der Heimfahrt nach Halovo und hatte kein Visum zur Durchreise durch Ungarn und nur noch 46 Stunden Zeit, Österreich zu verlassen. Ich hab ihr geholfen, rechtzeitig und visumsfrei außer Landes zu kommen und musste ihr das Versprechen geben, sie in der Woche drauf in Serbien besuchen zu kommen.
